Wrong-Way Interstate Drivers - September 2009

Wrong way sign2.bmpBoise, Idaho – September 30, 2009 – The 911 calls started at 12:30 a.m. and pointed in the direction of an eastbound car in the westbound lanes of I-84. One driver to avoid a head-on collision drove into a construction area and crashed. The wrong-way driver eventually drove into a construction are, struck a pile of concrete and crashed. She was taken to the hospital. Idaho State Troopers were reported pointing to alcohol as the most likely contributing factor for this 17-year-old female driver.

Grand Rapids, Michigan – September 30, 2009 – In court and looking entirely somber, this wrong-way driver is reported to have been sentenced to four years and nine months in prison for his wrong-way drunk driving on I-196 in May 2009. The judge could have given him 15-years. The report indicates a Grand Valley State student died in the crash. A description by a passenger in the dead girl’s car is probably the most sobering revelation to read. "The vision of her crushed, lifeless body stays in my mind over and over," said Leslie Kidd, O'Brien's sister. "Blood dripping on the floor. Glass stuck to her hair. I cannot get these images out of my mind. It has all but driven me to the brink of insanity." The accused made a statement asking for forgiveness.

Canyon County, Idaho – September 29, 2009 – From the Idaho Press this seventeen year-old-driver was going the wrong-way likely as a result of intoxication. There were several collision reported on I-84 caused by this eastbound driver being the westbound lanes, forcing other driver’s off the road until finally he crashed into a pile of fresh asphalt. He was taken to the hospital.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin – September 30, 2009 – An editorial by Jim Stingl concerning distracted drivers and unrestrained children passengers.

Ahwatukee, Arizona - September 28, 2009 – This wrong-way is on Pecos Road and resulted in no injuries fro this driver with a blood alcohol content of 0.15 in a 0.08 limit state. Several drivers narrowly escaped colliding with the wrong-way car.

North Yorkshire, England – September 29, 2009 – Seven-car crash on the A19 at 7:35 p.m., a Sunday. The driver as an 87-year-old gentleman driving a Land Rover. The article doesn’t say but it appears to be an age related incident.

Wales, U.K. – September 29, 2009 – The G.B. has the same issues with this as does the U.S. In this case you have a driver going the wrong-way on a divided highway at 80 m.p.h. In this instance the incident was intentional as part of an attempt to escape during a police chase.

Vancouver, Washington – September 28, 2009 – I-5 close to the I-205 Interchange at 1:30 a.m. This 49-year-old woman, Zeller is alleged to be driving north in the southbound lanes when the Washington State Trooper noticed her going the wrong-way. He crossed the median executed a pitting-to-spin move which caused her to go into the median area. She then attempted to continue to driver, but the trooper having other ideas broke the driver’s side window with his flashlight, reached in and turned off the ignition. Apparently an ambulance first was onto the chase. Contributing factors include the effects of prescription medication. Video.
