A Simple Screw Head Can Cause an Elevator or Escalator Accident

Escalator.jpgThe tightening of a screw can prevent a personal injury.

I received a letter from a company that does certified conveyance training along with a story about a woman in New York whose leg was caught in an elevator door while the elevator ascended 8 floors with her leg sticking outside the door. This one makes me cringe. I wondered if the story was accurate. There were several reports I found on the Internet confirming the story. See here, here, here, here, here and here

The tightening of a screw can prevent a personal injury accident.

A couple of years ago I wrote a story about elevator accidents and how an elevator can malfunction. Today let's focus on child safety and maintenance as it relates to escalators. In Iowa we don’t have as many  escalators, I suspect, as a city like NY or Chicago. So I’ve never run into one of these cases. But apparently dozens of children are hurt in escalator accidents each year.  Video is available on the particular escalator accident involving grade school children. A simple screw head that sticks up can catch the material of a pant leg and pull you into the steps' pinch points. That’s what happened in this instance; or so that is what is reported to have occurred. Perhaps before large groups of young people are allowed onto an escalator the teachers or parents may want to first determine where the emergency shut-off button is located; just in case it’s needed. And remember; if someone is caught don’t hesitate by second guessing yourself, just push the stop button.

Avoidance of these types of injuries is a part of standard maintenance. And I’m guessing if building owners call Certified Conveyance Training Corp., 4533 La Tuna Ct., Camarillo, CA 93012-4034 (866) 659-2227 you can get some answers to any questions you have.
